New sickle cell death
By MANDEEP SINGH , Posted on » Tuesday, March 09, 2010 THE fifth sickle cell patient in two months died at the Salmaniya Medical Complex yesterday - hours before campaigners were to call a bedside Press conference to highlight his plight. Hussain Ahmed Abdulla, 33, from Daih, was admitted two weeks ago, in severe pain, Society for Sickle Cell Anaemia Patient Care chairman Zakareya Ebrahim Alkadhem said yesterday. "When he came to the accident and emergency department, he was administered an injection after which he collapsed and his condition deteriorated," said Mr Alkadhem. "He was rushed to the resuscitation room where he stabilised, after which he was moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). "On Thursday, he was shifted to Ward 61. Though he appeared to be recovering, his skin had turned dark brown and his kidneys had failed. "He was in extreme pain and crying for doctors' attention when I saw him on Sunday evening. "He and his wife alleged he was not given enough attention and was not treated properly." He said Mr Abdulla had told him on Sunday evening that he wanted to call the Press to his bedside to highlight his plight and that of other sickle cell patients. "I wanted to organise a visit yesterday but he died at 7am," said Mr Alkadhem. He said Mr Abdulla was given dialysis treatment, because doctors said he was suffering from renal failure. "His family, however, insist he had no kidney problems and that he developed the condition as a result of the injection he received at the emergency department. "It was during the dialysis on Sunday evening that his condition deteriorated." The patient rights campaigner said Mr Abdulla had been given an injection to which he was allergic, without the mandatory test. "This has happened before and patients became critical as a result of allergic reactions," said Mr Alkadhem. The family blame the injection for Mr Abdulla's death and say they will take legal action if there are no clear answers from the authorities, he said. "They will lodge a complaint with the authorities in the next few days." The salesman leaves behind his wife and two children - a son, aged four, and a daughter, aged six. Two sickle cell patients died within hours of each other at the SMC on January 9. Khadija Sabah Salimi, 29, from Karbabad, died shortly after giving birth to a girl and mother-of-two Nawal Ahmed, 36, from Demistan, who was 14 weeks pregnant, died in the ICU. Khulood Faisal, 32, from Naim, died on January 30 as she was preparing to be discharged after three months' treatment. Eman Ibrahim Mesbah, 29, from Karrannah, died in the ICU late on February 21. Twenty-five sickle patients died at the SMC last year. A Health Ministry official would not comment on the latest incident. mandeep@gdn.com.bh GDN
